The Grand Canyon
For many, many years I wanted to see the Grand Canyon but I as I drove ever closer to it while on vacation in my rented car, I wondered if it was perhaps over hyped and whether photos and videos on the Internet (several of which I have seen) were sufficient to get an idea of it. After all, there are lots of amazing locations in the U.S. and around the world.
.
Then I finally saw it in person. My conclusion? It's awesome. Nature's unique magnificence and especially, nature's sheer power was on display. We think we are remarkable creatures but we can't build anything like this and we are puny in comparison.
.
The lesson? Pictures and videos don't do it justice (not even mine or anyone else's) for one reason. Photos and videos by definition isolate sections of beauty but cannot truly convey "scale" and dimensions as only an eyewitness view can. To understand its sheer size, you just have to go there and experience it.
.
Any image of the Grand Canyon, no matter how wonderful, is simply inadequate because fundamentally such images are small and the total opposite of the Canyon: huge.
