MarcMagazines
What if many of my countless photographs spanning over four and a half decades were used on magazine covers to preview many of the articles I have actually written or might write, on magazines that I also owned?
MarcMagazines are collections of experimental magazine covers illustrating essays and poems, as well as concepts of articles, based on existing web journals I have created, each with a theme. The web journals contain many dozens of actual essays and poems.
My approach to this concept involves letting the cover images I choose do as much or more, in partnership with article titles and descriptions, to characterize the content in the magazines. The covers tell stories on their own.
The titles of the magazines displayed here are:
Roamings: black and white photographs and retrospectives
Urban Journal: essays, poems and images with emphasis on urban life
ObserSpections: essays and autobiographical essays
Black Journal: politics, religion, race and sexuality
Moments: scenes from historical black and white photojournalism
The cover designs are all basic: a nameplate (at the top of the cover) representing the magazine/journal, a cover photograph and the title of the main article. The cover image functions as the biggest part of the design. This simplifies and focuses the cover while avoiding overdesign.
Some of the magazine covers are previews of controversial essays and poems that use nude photographs.
